The self styled time traveller employs a multi-purpose tool called a sonic screwdriver. First introduced in 1968, the sonic screwdriver was used extensively by the second Doctor and less frequently by the third and fourth Doctors prior to being written out the series during the tenure of the fifth Doctor.
