Last weekend was the annual Heroes Convention in Charlotte, NC. This year marks the 31st anniversary for this fabulous regional show sponsored by Shelton Drum’s Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find comics store.
I attended along with co-producer Patrick Michael Strange and director/cameraman Alvin Jones. A delightful time was had by all. We caught up with a number of talented artists and writers and launched a new web series devoted to the art of cosplay.
One of our goals was to complete interviews with talent from Valiant Comics for the upcoming special episode devoted to the relaunch of their amazing line. In addition to Robert Venditti you’ll see Roy Thomas, Matt Fraction, Arthur Suydam, Mark Bagley and David Petersen just to name a few.
Among the highlights for me was enjoying conversation with the likes of Roy Thomas. For those youngsters out there who may not be immediately familiar with him, Thomas is second only to Stan Lee in terms of influence on Marvel Comics in the late 60’s and early 70’s, having written every title and being the first person to officially hold the position of Editor-in-Chief. I was also giddy meeting the illustrious Jim Steranko. Steranko had lost his voice on Friday but committed to doing an interview in the near future. I also had a blast speaking with Steve Epting, who declined to appear on camera.
The ability of Shelton Drum to attract such talent is one of many reasons to put this convention on your list of must attend events. Keep watching, the best is yet to come!
